Processing Speed Is The First Thing To Slow
The rate at which the brain handles information declines earlier than memory or reasoning, and much of what looks like cognitive decline is downstream of that single change.

Among cognitive abilities, the speed at which information is processed declines earliest and most consistently. A large share of what looks like other decline is downstream of it.
What processing speed means
It refers to how quickly simple mental operations are carried out: comparing symbols, deciding whether two items match, or responding to a signal.
It is measured with deliberately trivial tasks, where the content is easy and only the rate matters, so speed is separated from knowledge or reasoning.
Measured this way, it begins declining from early adulthood and continues steadily, unlike vocabulary and accumulated knowledge, which hold or improve for decades.
Why it drags other abilities with it
Complex tasks require several operations completed close enough in time for their results to be combined. Slowing means earlier results may fade before later ones arrive.
Working memory is particularly affected, because holding information while manipulating it depends on the manipulation finishing before the trace decays.
Statistical analyses repeatedly find that when processing speed is accounted for, much of the age difference in memory and reasoning scores shrinks substantially.
What underlies the slowing
White matter, the insulated connections between brain regions, changes with age. Myelin integrity declines and small vessel damage accumulates.
Because complex cognition depends on coordination between distant regions, degraded connections slow transmission even where the regions themselves function normally.
This is why processing speed tracks white matter measures on imaging more closely than it tracks the volume of grey matter.
How it shows up day to day
Conversation in groups becomes harder, because turns arrive faster than responses can be assembled, particularly with background noise.
Unfamiliar situations demand more: new technology, an unexpected junction while driving, or an interrupted routine each require rapid handling of new information.
Familiar tasks are largely unaffected, because practised sequences rely on stored patterns rather than on real-time processing, which is why long-held skills often appear untouched.
Hearing loss magnifies the effect considerably, since effort spent reconstructing degraded speech consumes the same limited capacity that the task itself requires.
What follows from knowing this
Allowing more time changes performance markedly. Accuracy on most cognitive tasks is preserved when the time limit is removed, which is a genuinely different picture from decline in ability.
Reducing simultaneous demands has a similar effect, since interruption costs more when the recovery is slower.
A noticeable change over months rather than years, or difficulty with previously routine tasks, is a different pattern and warrants clinical assessment.
